Learn how you can open a BMO International Student Chequing Account with Practical Plan by following the steps outlined below.
Step 1: Access Application on BMO Website
- Access the BMO website.

Scroll down on the page, and select “Open Chequing Account”. This will redirect you to the submission form.

Step 2: Fill out the Application
Go through the application process step by step, making sure to answer every question as accurately as possible. For more information on how to complete each question, you can view BMO’s step by step guide.
- On page 2 of the form, select “Yes” for the question “Were you referred by a partner?”
- If you are working with a recruitment partner through ApplyBoard, enter your recruitment partner’s ID in the field “Please indicate the name of the partner”. If you are not working with a recruitment partner, you would put “ApplyBoard” in this field.
- Complete the rest of the form.
Step 3: Finalize the Application
- Once the form has been filled out, there will be a final review page. Go over this carefully, and ensure your information is correct. If it is, check the disclaimers at the bottom of the page and then click “Confirm & Apply”.
After applying, you will be contacted by BMO via email with next steps. For some countries, account details will be sent immediately. For others, more information may be required, and BMO will email you through secure email.
Students can wire transfer a minimum of $500 and up to $75,000 CAD to their new account before arriving in Canada. Upon arrival, students must visit a BMO branch in person with their passport, immigration documents, and BMO welcome letter to activate their account. No appointment is needed.
Step 4: Application Follow Up
Make sure to document all applications you have submitted, so you can keep track of when account details are issued and payments are received by the bank.
