If you're an international student planning to study in Ireland in 2026, you may need to apply for a student visa. While some students are visa-exempt based on their nationality, every international student must meet specific requirements to be granted permission to stay.

Eligibility to Study

To study in Ireland for longer than 90 days, you must choose a program from the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP). This ensures your course is recognized for immigration purposes. Eligible programs include:

If your course is not on the ILEP, non-EEA students will generally not be granted permission to remain in the state.

General Requirements for All International Students

Whether you require an entry visa or not, all non-EEA students must meet these core 2026 standards:

  • Letter of Acceptance (LOA): You must have an unconditional LOA for a full-time course with at least 15 hours of daytime study per week.
  • English Language Proficiency: You must provide a valid English language test result (such as IELTS or TOEFL) to prove you can follow your chosen course.
  • 2026 Financial Evidence: You must demonstrate immediate access to at least €10,000 for living expenses for the first year.
    • For courses lasting less than 8 months, the requirement is €833 per month.
    • You must also show ready access to €10,000 for each subsequent year of your studies in addition to course fees.
  • Tuition Payment: You must show proof that at least €6,000 has been paid toward your tuition fees (or the full amount if the fee is less).

Visa Types: Long Stay (D) vs. Short Stay (C)

If you are a visa-required national, you must apply for one of the following:

Long Stay Visa (D Visa)

Required for courses longer than 90 days. After arriving, you must register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) to receive an Irish Residence Permit (IRP), which costs €300.

Short Stay Visa (C Visa)

Suitable for courses lasting less than 90 days. This visa cannot be extended and does not permit the holder to work.
