Are you an international student looking to balance your studies with a part-time job? Navigating the UK student visa work rules is essential for staying compliant while gaining valuable professional experience. With the full transition to the UKVI eVisa system in 2026 and new updates to the Graduate Route, understanding your immigration rights has never been more important.
Whether you are wondering how many hours a student can work in the UK or looking for the latest Home Office guidance on student employment, this updated 2026 guide covers everything from term-time limits to the recent "visa brake" regulations.
Stay ahead of the curve with our breakdown of the most recent changes.

To ensure you are following the most current guidelines, always verify your specific situation on the official GOV.UK website or consult with a qualified immigration solicitor or your university’s international student advisory team.
Proving Your Status: The Era of the eVisa
The days of physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) are over. As of late 2025, the UK has fully phased out BRPs and paper vignettes in favor of the eVisa.
How to check your rights: Your work permissions and weekly hour limits are now found in your UKVI digital account.
Action Required: If you haven't already, you must link your identity documents to a UKVI account at GOV.UK to view and share your "right to work" via a digital share code.
Working During Your Studies
If you are on a Student visa for a full-time course at a provider with a "track record of compliance," your working hours generally remain:
Degree level and above: Up to 20 hours per week during term time.
Below degree level: Up to 10 hours per week during term time.
Vacation periods: Full-time work is permitted.
Important: The Home Office defines a "week" as Monday to Sunday. Hours cannot be averaged; if you work 21 hours in one week and 10 the next, you have breached your visa conditions.
The "Summer Vacation" Catch
Postgraduate students (Master’s and PhD) often do not have a summer vacation. While undergraduate students can work full-time in the summer, postgraduate students are usually considered to be in "term time" while writing their dissertations. Always check your specific course calendar before picking up extra shifts.
Restricted Work
Even with work rights, certain roles are strictly prohibited for Student visa holders. You cannot:
Be self-employed or engage in business activity (including freelance/contract work).
Be employed as a professional sportsperson or coach.
Work as an entertainer.
Fill a permanent full-time vacancy.
Recent Changes: The 2026 "Visa Brake"
Effective March 26, 2026, the UK government introduced a temporary "visa brake". This affects new applicants from specific countries:
Student Visas: Applications for entry clearance will be refused for main applicants who are nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan.
If you are already in the UK: This brake does not affect students already holding valid a valid visa for the UK, but you must continue to follow the conditions of your visa, as outlined by the UK Government.
After Graduation: The Graduate Route
Once you successfully complete your degree, you can apply for the Graduate visa. As of early 2026, the rules are:
Duration: 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates) if applying before December 31, 2026. Note that from January 1, 2027, this is scheduled to reduce to 18 months for most graduates.
Flexibility: Unlike the Student visa, the Graduate visa allows for self-employment and permanent full-time roles.
Cost: The application fee is currently £880, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,035 per year.
