How to Apply for a UK Student Visa

Visa applications are submitted online. You can apply from outside the UK, or from inside the UK if you are extending your student visa or switching visa types.

  • From outside the UK: Applications typically take around three weeks to process.
  • From inside the UK: Processing generally takes up to eight weeks.

If your supporting documents require verification, you have a criminal conviction, or you are called for an interview, it may take longer. Standard applications from outside the UK can be submitted up to six months before your course start date.

What is a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)?

In the UK, student visas are sponsored by the licensed institution you will be studying at. You must have an unconditional offer of admission from a licensed sponsor before applying. Your offer will arrive as a digital reference number called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which you add to your visa application.

UK Student Visa Requirements: Documents Checklist 2026/2027

International students need to submit several supporting documents with their student visa application. Use the UK government’s website to learn which ones you must provide.

In general, international students need the following documents:

  • A current passport or other valid travel documentation.
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
  • Biometric information.
  • A valid ATAS certificate (if required by your course and nationality).
  • English-language proficiency proof, typically through a UKVI-approved SELT.
  • Proof you can pay tuition and support yourself (and any family traveling with you).
    • If you’ve received sponsorship for course fees and living costs over the past 12 months, you’ll need written consent for your visa application from your financial sponsor.
  • Proof of parental or legal guardian consent and proof of their relationship with you if you’re under 18.
  • Tuberculosis test results (if applying from a listed country).
Biometric Information

When you submit your application, you will be asked to provide fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre. Some applicants may use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to scan their documents digitally instead.

Important Update: Important 2025 update: The UK moved fully to a digital eVisa system in 2025, replacing all physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs). Students no longer collect a physical card on arrival. Instead, you will manage your immigration status through a UKVI online account. Set this up as early as possible — it is your proof of right to study and work in the UK.

English Language Ability

You must prove your English ability through a government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), unless your institution makes their own assessment based on your previous qualifications.

Financial Capacity

You must show you have enough money to cover your travel, tuition, and living expenses. This money must be held in your account for at least 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before your application date.

As of 2026, the required maintenance funds are:

  • £1,529 per month (up to nine months) for courses in London.
  • £1,171 per month (up to nine months) for courses outside London.

If you have been living in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months, you may be exempt from proving financial maintenance.

Immigration Healthcare Surcharge (IHS) Costs for International Students

International students must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) upfront. For 2026, the student rate is £776 per year. This gives you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), though you must still pay for dental, optical, and some prescription costs.

IHS Rates 2026/27

Applicant Type Annual Rate
Students (main applicant) £776 per year
Student dependants £776 per year
Other adult visa applicants £1,035 per year
Applicants under 18 at application date £776 per year

UK Student Visa Length of Stay

A student visa is typically issued for the full length of your course, plus additional time before your course starts (up to one month for courses longer than six months) and after it ends.

UK Student Visa Dependant Rules: Can You Bring Family?

Only students enrolled on postgraduate research programmes (such as PhDs) lasting at least nine months, or those receiving government sponsorship, are permitted to bring dependants to the UK

Dependants pay the IHS at the student rate of £776 per year, not the standard adult rate.

UK Student Visa Fees and Priority Processing Costs

The standard Student visa fee is £558. Decisions usually take three weeks from outside the UK, but you can opt for Priority Service (£500 extra) for a 5-day decision or Super Priority (£1,000 extra) for a next-day decision.
