How to apply for accommodation through University Living
- Get your referral link. If you are working with a recruitment partner (agent), they will give you a special referral link. Use that link to start your application so your agent receives credit for the referral.
- Go to the accommodations page. If you are applying on your own, visit applyboard.com/accommodations to get started.
- Complete the Student Housing Request Form. Fill in your details accurately, including your destination city, school, and move-in date. Review your answers, then click Submit.
- Wait for University Living to contact you. After you submit the form, a University Living advisor will reach out directly to help you find and confirm your accommodation.
Tip! Apply as early as possible. Student housing in popular study destinations fills up quickly, especially before September and January intakes.
What is University Living?
University Living is a global student housing marketplace that ApplyBoard has partnered with to help you find accommodation near your school. It launched in March 2016 and specializes in Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) as well as private apartments and homestays. It operates in study destinations worldwide, including Canada, the UK, Australia, and Ireland.
Note: University Living is a separate platform from ApplyBoard. Once you submit your housing request, University Living's team manages your accommodation booking directly.
Types of student accommodation available
University Living offers three main types of housing. The right choice depends on your budget, destination, and how much independence you want.
PBSA is housing built specifically for students. It is usually located close to campus or on a public transport route. Key features include:
- All utility bills (gas, electricity, water) included in rent
- Furnished rooms with shared or private bathrooms
- On-site amenities such as Wi-Fi, gyms, and laundry facilities
- Social events and community activities organized for residents
- Fixed lease terms that align with academic semesters
PBSA is a popular choice for first-year international students because everything is set up and included. You move in and focus on your studies.
HMOs are private houses or apartments shared by multiple tenants who are not from the same family. In many countries, HMOs must meet legal safety standards, which typically include:
- Fire safety regulations and regular gas and electrical safety checks
- Clean, well-maintained communal areas
- Proper water supply and waste disposal management
Private apartments and HMOs give you more independence and often more space than PBSA. You can choose a shared or private unit depending on your budget.
A homestay means living with a local host family in their home. You typically have your own bedroom and share common areas like the kitchen and living room. Key features include:
- A private bedroom in a family home, sometimes in a separate nearby property
- The option to have meals with your host family or cook independently
- A chance to practise the local language and learn about local culture
- A more personal, supportive environment than renting alone
Homestays suit students who want a quieter environment, or who are travelling abroad for the first time and would like extra support settling in.
