When international students research education in Canada, one question comes up very quickly: what is the difference between a college and a university? In many countries, people use the words "college" and "university" to mean the same thing. In Canada, they are very different. Choosing the wrong one can affect your job options, your work rights after graduation, and your path to permanent residency. This guide explains the difference clearly so you can make the right choice.

What is a University in Canada? Degrees & Academic Focus

In Canada, there are three different types of post-secondary schools: universities, colleges, and institutes.

Universities offer programs on a wide range of topics at different levels. When you complete a university program, you receive a university degree. There are three types:

  • Bachelor's degree — takes 3 to 4 years to complete
  • Master's degree — takes 1 to 3 extra years after a bachelor's degree
  • Doctoral degree — the most advanced level, taking another 3 to 4 years after a master's degree

Universities focus on theory, research, and academic knowledge. They are also the only institutions in Canada that can grant degrees in regulated professions like medicine, law, and pharmacy.

What is a College in Canada? Diplomas & Practical Training

Colleges and institutes usually offer shorter programs than universities — typically 1 to 3 years. Instead of degrees, they issue diplomas and certificates that qualify graduates to do specific jobs in different industries.

Colleges go by different names depending on the province. You may see them called community colleges, polytechnics, institutes of technology, or colleges of applied arts and technology. They all focus on practical, hands-on learning that prepares you directly for work.

Note: Many colleges are also starting to offer bachelor's degrees and master's degrees in certain industries. So the line between colleges and universities is not as sharp as it used to be.

Co-op Programs: Paid Work While You Study

Both colleges and universities in Canada offer co-op programs. A co-op program means you spend part of your time studying and part of your time working in a real job — and you get paid for that work.

For international students, this is very valuable. It gives you Canadian work experience before you graduate. That experience helps you find a job after graduation and strengthens your application for permanent residency later.

After you graduate in Canada, you may be able to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This lets you stay and work in Canada legally. The rules are different depending on whether you studied at a university or a college.

If you graduate from a university bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program:

There are no field of study requirements for graduates with a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or doctoral degree. This means you can study almost any subject at university and still be eligible for the PGWP.

If you graduate from a college diploma or certificate program:

As of November 1, 2024, new study permit applicants pursuing college or certain shorter university programs — such as certificates and diplomas — need to graduate from a field of study linked to occupations in long-term shortage to be eligible for a PGWP. The list of eligible fields includes over 900 programs across five categories: healthcare, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), trades, transport, and agriculture and agri-food.

How long is the PGWP?

Graduates of programs that are at least two years in length at PGWP-eligible designated learning institutions are eligible for a three-year PGWP, as are graduates of master's degree programs less than two years in length.

Note: Before you apply to any college program, check that your specific program is on Canada's PGWP-eligible list. You can do this directly on Canada.ca. Not all programs offered by a designated learning institution are eligible for a PGWP.

Which Is Right for You?

Here is a simple way to think about it:

Choose a university if you:

  • Want a degree that is recognized worldwide — including back in your home country
  • Plan to study a regulated profession like medicine, engineering, or law
  • Want to do a master's or PhD in the future
  • Want full PGWP eligibility without worrying about your field of study

Choose a college if you:

  • Are studying a field on Canada's PGWP-eligible list — such as IT, healthcare, or engineering technology
  • Want practical, hands-on training with strong industry connections
  • Are looking for a more affordable option with good employment outcomes

The Bottom Line

In Canada, both colleges and universities are respected. The right choice depends on your goals — not on which one sounds more prestigious. What matters most is choosing a program that fits your career plans and keeps your immigration options open.
