A Personal Support Worker (PSW) program in Canada is typically an 8-month to 1-year certificate that trains students to provide hands-on personal care to seniors, people with disabilities, and people recovering from illness. It's a shorter, faster path into the Canadian workforce than a degree, but that shorter length also changes what you're eligible for after graduation, with respect to a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). What Is a Personal Support Worker Program?
A PSW program trains students to assist clients with daily living activities — bathing, dressing, mobility, feeding, basic health monitoring, and companionship. Programs combine classroom instruction with a supervised clinical placement in a real care setting.
- Most programs run 8 months to 1 year as a college certificate.
- Programs include an in-person clinical placement; IRCC's PGWP rules generally require at least 50% of instruction to be in person, so fully online PSW programs are not PGWP-eligible.
- Graduates work in long-term care homes, hospitals, retirement homes, home care agencies, and private households.
Requirements to Apply
- Academic: A high school diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent. Mature students without a high school diploma may qualify through an entrance exam or literacy assessment at some institutions.
- English or French proficiency: An approved test result if English or French isn't your first language. Requirements vary by institution — common minimums may include IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80, but confirm the exact score with your chosen program.
- Criminal record and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS): A clear criminal record check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening, is required before your clinical placement — this is a standard requirement across Canadian care settings, not specific to one college. This is generally completed in Canada after arrival, within a set window (commonly 30–45 days) after your program starts.
- CPR and First Aid certification: Standard First Aid and CPR (Basic Life Support / Health Care Provider level) from a Canadian provider, required before clinical placement begins.
- Immunization and health records: Current immunization records and, in some cases, tuberculosis testing, required before placement.
Note: In Ontario specifically, Personal Support Worker training programs must meet the province's official Personal Support Worker Training Standard under Ontario Regulation 79/10. A program that doesn't follow this standard cannot lead to employment as a PSW in a long-term care home in Ontario, even if it uses a similar name. Confirm a program meets the current provincial training standard before applying, especially if the program name isn't an exact match for "Personal Support Worker."
Is a PSW Program PGWP-Eligible?

Some PSW programs are PGWP-eligible, but not all. Even for eligible programs, the Post-Graduation Work Permit you receive is shorter than what a longer degree program would earn you.
Warning! This is different from the three-year PGWP many students expect from a longer program. An 8-month to 1-year PSW program earns a PGWP of roughly the same length, not three years.
Program-level PGWP eligibility also depends on the institution and delivery mode, not just the program name. Several Canadian colleges publish their own current list of PGWP-eligible programs. Always check that specific list; a program with "PSW" in the name is not automatically PGWP-eligible.
Career Outcomes: NOC Codes and What They Mean for Immigration
Where you end up working as a PSW changes which Canadian occupational classification (NOC) your work experience falls under, and that can have a direct effect on which immigration pathways it counts toward.
Facility-Based Care — NOC 33102
Covers nurse aides, orderlies, and patient service associates working inside a hospital, nursing home, or long-term care facility. This is a TEER 3 occupation, which generally qualifies work experience toward the Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Worker programs under Express Entry.
Home-Based Care — NOC 44101
Covers home support workers, caregivers, and related occupations providing care in a client's private residence. This is a TEER 4 occupation, and on its own, it does not qualify for Express Entry or generate Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. Some provincial programs, such as certain Provincial Nominee Program streams, may still recognize this occupation.
