What Is a Leap Card?
A Leap Card is a reusable smart travel card operated by Transport for Ireland (TFI), Ireland's national transport authority. You load money onto it and tap it on a card reader when you board and again when you exit public transport.
Using a Leap Card costs less than buying a paper ticket for each trip. It works on most buses, trams, and trains across the country.
Note: The Leap Card is not a single-use ticket. You keep it, add money when it runs low, and reuse it for every journey.
Choosing the Right TFI Leap Card
Transport for Ireland (TFI) offers three primary types of Leap Cards. Choosing the right one depends on your age and student status, but both Young Adult and Student cards give you 50% off adult single fares across the TFI network.
Age 19–25 Tip: If you are between 19 and 25 years old, apply for the Young Adult TFI Leap Card. You get the exact same 50% discount as a Student card, but you don't need to submit college enrollment verification letters, and the card is mailed straight to your home!
How to Apply for Your Discounted Card
Option A: Young Adult Card (Ages 19–25)
If you are 19–25 years old, follow these steps to have your card posted to you:
- Prepare your documents: Ensure you have a valid passport, driver's licence, or learner permit ready, along with a payment card for the €5 refundable deposit plus a minimum €5 travel credit (€10 total).
- Complete online application: Visit leapcard.ie and fill out your details.
- Take a live selfie: Enable camera permissions to take a live selfie during the verification process to validate your likeness against your ID. This photo will be printed on your card.
- Receive by post: Once verified, your card will be sent to your nominated Irish home address, usually within 5 working days.
Option B: Student Card (Ages 16–18 or 26+)
If you are a full-time student aged 26 or older (or 16–18), follow these steps to apply and collect your card:
- Get official proof of enrollment: Request an official letter from your college/institution detailing that your course is full-time (15+ hours/week) and runs for at least 6 months/25 weeks. The letter must have an official header, footer, and a clear stamp or signature. (Note: International students must upload their acceptance letters in English or Irish).
- Apply online: Visit leapcard.ie after your official course start date to upload your documents, date of birth, and pay the €5 deposit plus minimum €5 travel credit.
- Wait for confirmation email: Wait up to 5 working days for a confirmation email stating your order has been processed and is ready for collection.
- Collect in person: Visit an authorized Student Leap Card Agent (such as your campus Students' Union or designated agent point). You must show your Student ID and a valid photo ID proving your age to pick up your printed card.
Important Conditions to Remember:
- Mandatory Registration: Once you receive or collect your card, you must register it online to protect your balance if it is ever lost or stolen.
- Online Courses Ineligible: Students enrolled in online-only courses do not qualify for the Student Leap Card.
- No Early Applications: Student applications cannot be submitted prior to your official course start date.
Can International Students Apply for a Student Leap Card?
Yes. International students enrolled full-time at an eligible Irish college or university can apply for the Student Leap Card. You will need to provide proof of enrollment from your college as part of the application. According to Leap Card, international students must upload their acceptance letter from their Irish college or university. All documentation must be submitted in English or Irish.
How to Get a Regular Leap Card
You can pick up a Regular Leap Card the same day you arrive in Ireland. No advance application is needed.
- Convenience stores and newsagents: There are over 2,500 TFI Leap agents across Ireland, including PostPoint outlets and many convenience stores. Use the agent locator on leapcard.ie to find the nearest one to you.
- TFI top-up machines: Located at Luas tram stops and Irish Rail stations. You can buy a new card or top up an existing one.
- Online: Set up and manage your card at leapcard.ie.

How to Top Up Your Leap Card
Topping up means adding money to your card so you can keep travelling. There are four ways to do it.
Online at leapcard.ie
Log in to your account and add credit with a debit or credit card. Online top-ups can take up to 24 hours to appear on your card, so plan ahead.
TFI Leap App
Download the free Leap Top-Up app on your smartphone (available on iOS for iPhone 7 and above, and on NFC-enabled Android phones running Android 6 or higher) to top up and check your balance. App top-ups may also take time to activate.
Retail Shops
Ask the cashier at a Leap-enabled shop like Centra, SuperValu, or Spar to add credit to your card. Retail top-ups are usually instant.
TFI Top-Up Machines
Use a machine at a Luas stop or a train station. These accept debit cards and cash, and top-ups are typically instant.
Warning! If your Leap Card runs out of credit, you will not be able to board any service. Always top up before your balance gets too low, especially before a busy week at college.
Using Your Leap Card in Dublin, Cork, and Galway
Your Leap Card works on most public transport in Ireland. Here is what is available in each of the main student cities.
Dublin
Dublin has the most public transport options in Ireland. Your Leap Card works on all of the following Dublin services.
- Dublin Bus: The main city bus network, covering Dublin and surrounding areas.
- Luas: The city tram (light rail) system. The Red Line connects Tallaght and Saggart to The Point. The Green Line runs from Brides Glen through the city centre to Broombridge.
- DART: The Dublin Area Rapid Transit, a suburban rail service running along the coast between Malahide and Howth in the north and Greystones in the south.
- Irish Rail commuter trains: Suburban rail lines linking Dublin city centre to towns across the greater Dublin area.
- Go-Ahead Ireland: Bus services operating across Dublin and parts of surrounding counties.
- Bus Eireann: Intercity and regional coaches connecting Dublin to Cork, Galway, and cities across Ireland.
Cork
In Cork, your Leap Card works on Bus Éireann city bus services, TFI Local Link regional services, and Irish Rail commuter trains on the Cork to Cobh and Cork to Midleton routes. These cover University College Cork (UCC), Munster Technological University (MTU), and most parts of the city.
Galway
In Galway, your Leap Card is accepted on Bus Éireann city services (routes 401–409), TFI Local Link, and City Direct services (routes 410–414). Galway is a compact and walkable city, and many students also cycle.

Key Tips for Using Your Leap Card
These habits will help you avoid common problems and get the most out of your card from day one.
- Always tap on and tap off. On most services you must tap your Leap Card when you board and again when you exit the vehicle. Forgetting to tap off can result in being charged the highest fare for that route.
- Register your card as soon as possible. Go to leapcard.ie and register your card. If it is ever lost or stolen, a registered card can be blocked and your remaining balance transferred to a new one. An unregistered card cannot be replaced.
- Check your balance regularly. You can check it on the leapcard.ie website, through the app, or at any top-up machine. Never let your balance reach zero before a long day of travel.
- Plan ahead for online top-ups. Top-ups made online or through the app can take up to 24 hours to appear. If you need credit right away, use a shop or a top-up machine for an instant top-up.

Registered Adult Leap Cards can be refunded, including your €5 refundable deposit. Log in to your leapcard.ie account, select "Refund or Replace," and enter your IBAN and BIC bank details. Refunds go to accounts in the SEPA region only. If your bank is outside SEPA, you can instead donate your remaining balance to a charity partner (including Red Cross, Focus Ireland, or UNICEF Ireland). Visitor Cards cannot be refunded. Unregistered cards cannot be replaced or refunded — always register your card.
