Good news for students planning to study in the UK: the UK Graduate visa will stay at two years for graduates of high-compliance universities. The government announced this in the UK Budget 2026 on October 28, 2026. The Graduate visa (a visa that lets you stay and work in the UK after you finish your degree) was due to drop to 18 months for most graduates from January 1, 2027.

This update explains what changed, what is still not decided, and what it means for you if you are studying in the UK now or planning to start soon.

What Did the UK Budget 2026 Announce About the Graduate Visa?

The UK Budget 2026 says the Graduate visa will last two years for people who graduate from high-compliance universities with strong labour market outcomes. "Strong labour market outcomes" means that graduates from these universities do well at finding good jobs.

The Budget calls this "extending the graduate visa from 18 months to two years for eligible universities." You can read the full Budget 2026 document on GOV.UK. The Graduate visa section is in Chapter 5, under "Access to talent".

Two Years for Eligible Universities

Graduates of high-compliance universities with strong job outcomes will get a two-year Graduate visa.

18 Months for Others

Other graduates who apply on or after January 1, 2027 are still set to get 18 months, under the current rules.

Three Years for PhD Graduates

If you finish a PhD or other doctorate, your Graduate visa still lasts three years.

How Long Will the UK Graduate Visa Last?

How long your Graduate visa lasts depends on when you apply, your level of study and, once the new rules start, your university. Here is how it looks today, based on the official Graduate visa page and the Budget announcement.

Your Situation Graduate Visa Length Status
You apply on or before December 31, 2026 2 years Current rule
You apply on or after January 1, 2027 18 months Current rule
You graduate from a high-compliance university with strong labour market outcomes 2 years Announced; start date and details not yet published
You complete a PhD or other doctorate 3 years Current rule

Note: The 18-month rule was set in the UK Immigration Rules in October 2025. It still applies to applications made on or after January 1, 2027, until the government publishes new rules for the two-year option.

What Is a High-Compliance University?

The government has not yet said what a "high-compliance university" is. The Budget does not explain how universities will be chosen, how job outcomes will be measured, or how many universities will qualify.

Today, every university that sponsors Student visas must already show a good compliance record. Compliance means following the Home Office rules for sponsoring international students. To offer the Graduate visa at all, your university must be a licensed sponsor with a "track record of compliance."

The new two-year option is likely to set a higher bar than this, but the details are not public yet. We will update this article when the government publishes them.

Tip! You can check your university's sponsor status on the official register of licensed student sponsors. Look for "Student Sponsor - Track Record" in the status column.

What Does This Mean for International Students?

The answer depends on where you are in your studies. Here is what to do now:

  1. If you finish your course before the end of 2026: You can still get a two-year Graduate visa if you apply on or before December 31, 2026. You can only apply after your university tells the Home Office you have completed your course.
  2. If you graduate in 2027 or later: Your Graduate visa is set at 18 months for now. You may get two years if your university qualifies as high-compliance once the new rules start. Ask your university's international student office for updates.
  3. If you are choosing a UK university now: A university's compliance record and graduate job outcomes may soon affect your time to work after graduation. Look at graduate employment results when you compare universities.

Warning! Do not plan on a two-year Graduate visa until the government confirms which universities qualify and when the rules start. Be careful of anyone who promises you two years before then.

Other Budget Changes for International Graduates

The Budget also announced changes to other UK visas for graduates and skilled workers:

  • High Potential Individual visa: This visa lets recent graduates of top global universities work in the UK without a job offer. It will expand to graduates of the top 150 universities in the world, with a matching rise in the number of places.
  • More time to find a new job: The highest-skilled workers will get up to six months to find a new job if their visa is cut short. This is planned for 2027.
