Ireland offers a globally recognized education system spanning three levels: primary, post-primary (secondary), and higher education. Whether you’re planning to study at an undergraduate or postgraduate level, understanding this structure will help you prepare for your academic journey.

School Education in Ireland

School is compulsory for children aged 6 to 16 and consists of:

  • Primary School: Starting as early as age 4 or 5, lasting for 7 or 8 years.
  • Junior Cycle: A 3-year program for students aged 12 to 15.
  • Senior Cycle: Lasts 2 or 3 years (ages 15–18) and offers three different paths depending on the student's future plans:
    • Leaving Certificate: The main path for getting into university. While it focuses on traditional exams in subjects like English and Math, new 2026 updates mean subjects like Science and Business now count project work for 40% of the final grade.
    • Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP): A version of the Leaving Certificate that combines academic study with practical modules on work experience and business skills.
    • Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA): A hands-on program designed to prepare students directly for the working world. It uses continuous assessment (classwork) instead of high-pressure final exams.

Schools vary between private and public, some offering instruction in Irish, though English is the main language in most areas.

Higher Education in Ireland

For students 18 and older, Ireland’s higher education includes universities, colleges, and technical institutions offering:

  • Undergraduate degrees like Bachelor's programs combining lectures and practical work.
  • Postgraduate studies such as Master’s and Doctoral degrees involving coursework and research.

Universities and Specializations

Irish universities operate independently, providing a wide range of academic programs—from arts to STEM fields. The Technological Sector focuses heavily on science, engineering, and technology, offering a variety of certificates, diplomas, and degrees.

Training Future Educators

Colleges of Education train primary school teachers, while secondary school teacher training often takes place at universities. This typically involves a four-year undergraduate degree or a standard degree followed by a two-year Professional Master of Education (PME).
