If you hold a Higher National Diploma (HND) and want to study in the USA, your qualification has real value — but the US education system works differently from the UK or Nigerian system. This article explains what an HND is equivalent to in the USA, how US universities assess it, and what steps you need to take to apply.

What Is an HND?

An HND (Higher National Diploma) is a higher education qualification. In the UK, it is a two-year, Level 5 qualification that is equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor's degree. In Nigeria, an HND is awarded by polytechnics after four to five years of study, including an Ordinary National Diploma (ND) and an industrial training period.

The HND is a well-respected qualification in many countries. However, the USA does not have a direct equivalent, so US universities assess HNDs case by case.

Note: The US education system uses associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and doctoral degrees. There is no "HND" category in the American system, which is why a credential evaluation is so important.

What Is an HND Equivalent to in the USA?

There is no single official answer, because equivalency depends on the country where you earned your HND and how the individual university assesses it. That said, here is the general picture.

HND Type Common US Equivalency What This Means for Admission
UK HND (2 years, Level 5) Associate degree or first two years of a bachelor's degree You may be able to transfer into Year 2 or Year 3 of a US bachelor's program. For Master's programs, a 2-year UK HND is generally not accepted for direct entry.
Nigerian HND (4–5 years, polytechnic) Often treated as equivalent to a bachelor's degree by many US universities You may be eligible for graduate (master's) program admission, though each university decides independently.
HND from other countries Varies — assessed on duration, institution type, and content A credential evaluation (see below) will give you the clearest answer.

Disclaimer: Equivalency decisions are made by individual universities and credential evaluation agencies, not by the US government. The information above reflects common practice, not a guaranteed outcome. Always confirm with the university you want to apply to, or speak with ApplyBoard.

Why You Need a Credential Evaluation

Most US universities will not assess your HND on their own. They ask you to get a credential evaluation from an approved agency first. This evaluation translates your qualification into US terms so the admissions team can understand it.

A Course-by-Course credential evaluation agency reviews your transcripts and certificate, then produces a report stating what your qualification is equivalent to in the US system, including a calculated US GPA.

World Education Services (WES)

WES (World Education Services) is one of the most widely accepted credential evaluation agencies in the USA and Canada. Many US universities specifically ask for a WES evaluation. You apply online at wes.org, submit your documents, and WES sends its report directly to your chosen institutions.

Tip! WES offers a free Degree Equivalency Tool at wes.org/tools. You can use it to get a general idea of how your qualification may be assessed before you apply.

Other Approved Agencies

WES is not the only option. The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) lists all approved agencies on its website. Check with your target university to find out which agencies they accept.

Note: Credential evaluations take time. Once WES receives and approves all your documents, standard evaluation takes about 7 business days. However, getting transcripts sent from your school can take weeks. Plan ahead and start the process early — ideally three to four months before your application deadline. Keep up-to-date with processing times on wes.org.

Can You Apply for a Bachelor's Degree in the USA with an HND?

Yes, many students with an HND apply to US bachelor's degree programs. Whether you can enter as a transfer student (with advanced standing) or as a first-year student depends on how the university assesses your HND and how many credits they will accept.

  • Some universities will accept your HND credits and let you enter directly into Year 2 or Year 3, reducing the time you need to finish your degree.
  • Others may ask you to start from Year 1, especially if they do not have a transfer agreement in place for your qualification.
  • The subject area matters. An HND in Business has a clearer path into a Business bachelor's program than into, say, Medicine or Law.

Can You Apply for a Master's Degree in the USA with an HND?

This depends on your HND type and the university's own policies.

Students with a Nigerian HND have successfully gained admission to US master's programs because the Nigerian HND (taken after the ND, with industrial training) is often recognized as equivalent to a four-year bachelor's degree. However, this is not guaranteed. Each university makes its own decision, and some will require you to complete a bachelor's degree first.

If you want to apply for a master's program, get a credential evaluation early. This gives you a clear picture of how your HND will likely be assessed, and it shows the university that you have taken the process seriously.

Warning! Do not assume that a master's program will accept your HND without checking. Some programs have strict minimum entry requirements. Always read the admissions page carefully, and ask ApplyBoard if you are unsure.
