If you hold an HND (Higher National Diploma), the UK offers the most direct route to a full bachelor's degree anywhere in the world. This guide explains how UK top-up degrees work, which subjects are available, what you need to apply, and how to find programs on ApplyBoard.
Note: This article covers UK-specific options for HND holders. For an overview of all your study pathways — including Canada, USA, and postgraduate programs — see I Have an HND — What Can I Study Next?
Why the UK is the Best Destination for HND Holders
The UK is the most popular study destination for HND holders for one simple reason: the UK education system was built with the HND in mind. UK universities formally recognise your HND as equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor's degree. This means you can enter directly into the final year of a bachelor's program and graduate with a full UK degree in just one additional year.
This one-year route is called a top-up degree. It is a well-established, widely available option at universities across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. No other country offers top-up degrees as consistently or as broadly as the UK.
One year to a full degree
Instead of starting a three-year bachelor's program from scratch, you enter the final year directly. You save two years of tuition and living costs.
Globally recognized qualification
A UK bachelor's degree is recognized by employers and universities around the world. It opens doors to master's programs, professional roles, and immigration pathways in many countries.
Graduate visa included
After completing your top-up degree, you are eligible to apply for the UK Graduate visa. This lets you stay in the UK to work or look for work — with no job offer required upfront.
Note: The UK Graduate visa is available to students who successfully complete a bachelor's degree or higher at a licensed UK university. Top-up degrees qualify. If you apply on or before December 31, 2026, the visa is granted for 2 years. Please be aware that under current UK immigration policy, applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027, will grant a visa duration of 18 months for Bachelor's graduates. Always confirm eligibility with your university before applying.
What Subjects Can You Top Up in the UK?
Top-up degrees are available across a wide range of subject areas. The strongest options for HND holders are in business, management, and related fields — but computing, engineering, hospitality, and creative subjects are also well represented.
Business and Management
Business top-up degrees are the most widely available in the UK. You can find them at universities across the country, in specializations including general business management, marketing, finance, and international business. Several universities on the ApplyBoard platform offer business top-ups with strong employment outcomes.
- University of Roehampton — top-up degrees in Business and Management
- University of Law — top-up degrees in Business and Legal Practice
- Middlesex University — top-up degrees in Business, Information Technology, and more
- University of Chester — top-up degrees in Business and related subjects
International Business
- University of South Wales — top-up degrees in International Business and Business Management
Tourism and Hospitality
- University of Central Lancashire — top-up degrees in Tourism, Hospitality, and Events Management
Tip! Your HND subject should match or closely relate to the top-up degree subject. A Business HND into a Business top-up is a strong match. A Computing HND into a Marketing top-up may require extra justification in your personal statement. When in doubt, ask ApplyBoard.
What Do You Need to Apply?
Each university sets its own entry requirements, but most UK top-up degree applications from HND holders require the following documents.
The UK Student Visa
To study a top-up degree in the UK as an international student, you need a UK Student visa. You can only apply for this visa after you have received an unconditional offer from a licensed UK university and been issued a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter.
- The UK Student visa application fee is currently £558 for applications made outside the UK.
- You will also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) upfront, which is currently £776 per year for students, giving you access to the National Health Service (NHS) during your stay.
- Students from certain countries must complete a tuberculosis (TB) test at an approved clinic before applying.
