Your Three Main Pathways

HND holders can generally choose from three primary academic routes when studying abroad. The right option depends on your career goals, your cumulative grades, and your target destination.

Pathway 1: Top-up to a Bachelor's Degree

A top-up degree lets you complete a full bachelor's degree in just one additional year of study. This is possible because your HND is formally recognized as equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor's degree. Instead of starting from scratch, you enter directly into the final year.

Top-up degrees are most widely available in the UK, where they are a well-established part of the university system. Some universities in Canada, Australia, and the USA also offer advanced standing for HND holders under different names — look for "advanced entry," "credit transfer," or "Year 3 entry" in program listings.

Tip! To find top-up programs on ApplyBoard, select Top-up degree from the Program level filter, or type Advanced Entry or Year 3 Entry into the search bar.

Pathway 2: Post-Graduate Diplomas and Certificates

Post-graduate diplomas (PGD) and post-graduate certificates are highly popular, career-focused options, particularly in Canada. These standalone credentials last one to two years and are offered by colleges and technical institutes to build directly upon your HND technical skills.

This pathway is heavily utilized by international students looking to gain access to local employment. For example, completing an eligible post-graduate diploma can qualify you for a Canadian Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), provided your program of study aligns with targeted labor shortage sectors (such as STEM, health, or trade fields).

You can find these on ApplyBoard by filtering your search results by the Post-Graduate Certificate/Diploma program level.

Pathway 3: Pre-Master's Bridge Programs

If your ultimate goal is a university master's degree but your HND grades or credentials do not meet direct entry requirements, a pre-master's or graduate pathway program is your primary bridge.

These preparatory programs typically last one to two semesters. They focus strictly on refining your academic writing, research methodologies, and domain knowledge. Upon successful completion meeting specified progression grades, you are granted guaranteed entry into the partner university's full master's program.

You can find these on ApplyBoard by searching for Pre-Master's or Graduate Pathway.

Explore Options By Destination

What your HND is worth — and which programs are available — depends on where you want to study. Use these guides to explore each destination in detail.

United Kingdom

The UK has the largest number of structured top-up degrees for HND holders. Most UK universities allow you to enter the final year of a matching bachelor's degree. Read the UK guide.

USA

The USA has no direct HND equivalent, so a course-by-course credential evaluation (like WES) is required. If your combined courses are evaluated as equivalent to a US Bachelor's degree, postgraduate study options become available. Read the USA guide.

Canada

Canadian institutions assess HNDs strictly on a case-by-case basis through credit transfers. For postgraduate study, HND holders typically utilize career-oriented Post-Graduate Certificates or Diplomas to access the Canadian workforce. Read the Canada guide.

Your HND is more than a qualification — it is a genuine foundation for an international degree and career. The right next step is out there. Let ApplyBoard help you find it.
