If you hold an HND (Higher National Diploma) and want to study in Canada, you have real options — but Canada works differently from the UK. This guide explains how Canadian universities assess your HND, which study pathways are available, and what the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) means for your future in Canada.
Note: This article covers study pathways in Canada for all HND holders. If you hold a Nigerian or West African HND and are applying for Express Entry or a Canadian Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), see our dedicated guide: How to Convert Your West African HND to Canadian Equivalency.
How Canada Assesses Your HND
Canada does not have a formal "top-up degree" system like the UK. Canadian universities assess HNDs through a credit transfer process, evaluating how many of your previous courses match their own program requirements. The outcome — how much credit you receive and which year you enter — depends on your HND subject, your grades, and the specific university.
In general, HND holders can expect up to two years of advanced standing at Canadian universities. This means you may be able to enter Year 2 or Year 3 of a bachelor's degree instead of starting from the beginning, reducing the time and cost of completing your degree in Canada.
Note: Unlike the UK, where a top-up degree takes exactly one year, completing a bachelor's degree in Canada with an HND typically takes two to three additional years, depending on how many credits are accepted. This is an important difference to factor into your plans.
Your Two Study Pathways in Canada
Pathway 1: Advanced entry into a bachelor's degree
Some Canadian universities accept HND holders for direct advanced entry into a bachelor's degree program. Your HND subject must match or closely relate to the degree program you are applying for. The university will assess your transcripts and decide how many credits to accept.
You can expect to complete one to two additional years of study to finish your bachelor's degree, depending on how many credits are transferred. Your subject area and grades both affect this decision.
Tip! Use the Advanced Entry search on ApplyBoard to find programs that specifically welcome credit transfer students. Your ApplyBoard counsellor can help you identify which institutions are most likely to accept your HND.
Pathway 2: Post-graduate diploma or certificate
A post-graduate diploma (PGD) or post-graduate certificate is one of the most popular routes for HND holders in Canada. These programs are offered by colleges and some universities. They typically last one to two years and are designed for students who already hold a diploma or equivalent qualification.
A post-graduate diploma in Canada has two major advantages for HND holders.
- It can qualify you for a PGWP (Subject to Field of Study). To be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit after completing a college or post-graduate diploma, IRCC rules require your program to align with specific, long-term labor shortage fields (such as health, STEM, or trade sectors). If eligible, this permit lets you work in Canada, providing valuable local experience to support future residency pathways.
- It requires a lower language tier for work. While university degree grads need a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 to get their PGWP, college and post-graduate diploma graduates only require a minimum of CLB 5 when applying for their post-study permit.
- It can lead to a master's degree. If you complete a post-graduate diploma with strong grades — typically a B average or higher — some universities will consider you for master's program admission, effectively bridging the gap between your HND and graduate-level entry.
The PGWP: Why Canada is a Strong Choice for Your Future
One of the biggest reasons HND holders may choose Canada is the Post-Graduation Work Permit. For programs meeting IRCC’s eligibility criteria, completing an eligible full-time course at a Designated Learning Institution lets you work in Canada for up to three years (the exact permit length generally mirrors your academic program duration, though master's degrees receive a full three years regardless of program length).
Note: PGWP rules are highly strict regarding your institution's DLI status, program length, and approved field-of-study categories. For non-degree pathways (diplomas and certificates), IRCC enforces a locked field-of-study list. Always confirm current PGWP eligibility criteria before locking in your program choice.
Do You Need a Credential Evaluation for Canada?
For university admission in Canada, a formal credential evaluation is not always required — some universities will assess your HND transcripts directly. However, for immigration purposes (such as Express Entry), a credential evaluation from an approved Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) body is required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
The most commonly used ECA bodies for Canadian immigration are World Education Services (WES), IQAS, and ICES. Each agency assesses your qualification differently, and the result can affect your immigration points score.
For a full breakdown of which ECA body to choose, what documents you need, and how the evaluation affects your Express Entry CRS score, read our dedicated guide: How to Convert Your West African HND to Canadian Equivalency.
