In late September 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated its processing times tool to show personalized wait times for in-Canada work permit extensions and first-time Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applications. Instead of one general estimate for everyone, you can now see an estimate based on the date you applied.
Note: Processing times are estimates and can change as IRCC updates its data. Always check the official IRCC processing times tool for the latest information.
What Changed With IRCC Processing Times
- A personalized estimate: Enter your application date to see your estimated remaining wait time, in weeks.
- Your place in the queue: The tool shows how many applicants are ahead of you.
- The total queue: You can also see how many applicants are waiting for a decision in total. As of September 26, 2026, IRCC estimated 202,900 applicants were waiting.
- An estimate before you apply: If you have not applied yet, the tool shows how long you might wait if you applied on the day you check.
Who the New Processing Times Apply To
The personalized estimate is available for applicants who are already in Canada and are:
- Applying for their first Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after completing their studies
- Extending an existing work permit
- Changing the conditions of an existing work permit
First-time work permit applicants applying from inside Canada for a work permit other than a PGWP should still use the standard "Work permit in Canada" option in the tool.
How to Check Your Personalized Processing Time
- Go to the IRCC processing times page.
- Select Temporary residence, then Work permit extension in Canada.
- Enter the date you submitted your application.
- Select Get processing time to see your estimated remaining wait and how many applicants are ahead of you.
Tip! Use the exact date IRCC received your complete application. You can find it on your submission confirmation or in your IRCC account.
Understand maintained status
Learn what maintained status means for onshore students and graduates while IRCC processes your application.
What This Means for International Students and Graduates
Knowing your estimated wait time can help you plan your job search, your housing, and any travel. It does not change the rules for what you can do while you wait. The most important thing is to apply on time, so you keep your status in Canada.
If You Are Applying for a PGWP
You must apply within 180 days of receiving confirmation that you completed your program, such as your final marks or an official completion letter. You can work full-time while you wait for a decision if all of these applied when you submitted your PGWP application:
- You had a valid study permit.
- You had completed your program of study.
- You were eligible to work off campus without a work permit.
- You did not work off campus for more than 24 hours a week during academic sessions.
If You Are Extending a Work Permit
If you applied to extend or change your work permit before it expired, you have maintained status. This means you can stay in Canada and keep working under the same conditions as your current permit until IRCC makes a decision. For example, if your permit is tied to one employer, you cannot switch employers while you wait.
Thinking About Travelling?
Warning! Check the rules carefully before you leave Canada while an application is in process. If you are waiting on a work permit extension, IRCC says you must stay in Canada to keep your maintained status. PGWP applicants may be able to return as a visitor and keep working, but a border officer can refuse entry, and you cannot apply for a PGWP at the border. Review IRCC's guidance before you book travel.
Tips While You Wait
- Keep your proof of application. Your employer may ask for it to confirm you are allowed to keep working.
- Check the tool regularly. IRCC updates its estimates over time, so your wait time may change.
- Watch your IRCC account. IRCC may ask for more documents or biometrics. Responding quickly helps avoid delays.
- Plan ahead for your next step. If you are considering a second program in Canada, make sure you avoid a gap in status. Learn how to avoid a gap in status.
